Mobile workers who need to crunch data or create world-class content on the go can find multiple powerful laptops that have the performance chops to get the job done, but getting excellent performance while running on battery power can be a challenge. Achieving all that without the inefficiencies of overheating and distracting fan noise is even more challenging. Nonetheless, businesses that want to empower mobile workers should aim to equip their teams with workstations that provide strong blends of consistent unplugged performance and personal comfort.
We used industry-standard benchmarks to provide real-world battery life estimates and document differences between the plugged-in and unplugged system performance of three laptops: an HP EliteBook 845 G10 Notebook PC powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U processor, a Dell Latitude 7440 laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-1365U vPro processor, and a previous-gen HP EliteBook 845 G9 Notebook PC powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U processor. In our tests, the EliteBook 845 G10 provided longer battery life than both the Latitude 7440 and the EliteBook 845 G9, and significantly outperformed those systems across multiple benchmarks. The G10 also delivered more consistent performance than the other two laptops when going from plugged-in to unplugged, suffering less of a performance drop than the others.
We also hand-measured how hot and loud each laptop became while running a CPU-intensive workload. During our thermal tests, the underside of the EliteBook 845 G10 ran 18°F cooler than the Latitude 7440 and 10°F cooler than the EliteBook 845 G9. In acoustic testing, the G10 ran quieter than the other two systems during sustained workloads.
Factor in the longer battery life, more consistent unplugged performance, cooler temperatures, and lower system noise of the latest-gen EliteBook, and the HP EliteBook 845 G10 delivered overall better results than the Dell Latitude 7440 or HP EliteBook 845 G9 laptops.
