Each year, as more of the global economy moves online, businesses that rely on cloud-based e-commerce platforms to provide goods and services face the challenge of delivering lightning-fast transactions and seamless order processing to gain and retain customers in competitive markets. When choosing among the multiple private and public cloud solutions available, it can be difficult for decision makers to know which solution will consistently deliver the high levels of performance they’ll need as database demands increase and their business expands.
We tested two popular cloud solutions in typical Kubernetes container environments to see how well they handled online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads that can stress e-commerce databases: Dell APEX Private Cloud with VMware Tanzu and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). In our tests, the Dell APEX Private Cloud solution processed 24.9 percent more OLTP transactions and 24.7 percent more new orders per minute than the Amazon solution. The Dell APEX performance difference could give an e-commerce business the ability to process more new orders in less time than if it chose Amazon EKS with EC2 to run its OLTP workloads—a real competitive edge.
