For many businesses, the health and security of their data stores can make the difference between success and failure. Data integrity, data protection, and reliable access are all critical components for business continuity and providing customers with the seamless service levels they expect. Given the increasing number of cyberattacks worldwide and the ever-present threat of adverse events such as hardware failures, file corruption, accidental deletion, and natural disasters, proactive data protection strategies are a must. For companies that want to up their data protection game in response to those threats, state-of-the-art data backup and management appliances can be a smart place to start.

To see how two competing data backup solutions compared when handling critical data protection processes, we ran backup and restore scenarios on both solutions. The first solution consisted of a Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance with Transparent Snapshots utilizing the Light Weight Delta (LWD) service. The second solution—from a competitor we refer to as "Vendor X"—used Vendor X management software and the VMware vStorage API for Data Protection (VADP) in network block device (NBD) transport mode. We also measured each appliance’s power consumption during the backup and restore scenarios.

In our tests, we found that the Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance solution delivered an initial 500 VM backup faster than the Vendor X solution while also backing up the VMs within an overnight backup window—something the Vendor X solution could not do. The PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance also delivered faster incremental multi-day backups and a faster VM restore than the solution from Vendor X. Finally, the Dell solution consumed less power than the Vendor X solution during both the backup and restore scenarios.

Our results show that the Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance solution we tested can back up and restore data in less time than the Vendor X solution—while using less energy to get the job done—making it a capable, efficient, and cost-saving option for many successful data protection strategies.
